Galvin Outduels Black, Collins Delivers Late For Sand Sharks

Junior RHP Miles Galvin threw seven strong innings for the win
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - University of South Carolina Beaufort right-hander Miles Galvin outdueled Faulkner (Ala.) ace Corey Black, and Brandon Collins and Conald Mansfield combined for five RBIs as the Sand Sharks staved off elimination for the second time of the day Friday night in the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
Galvin (6-0) picked the perfect time for his best outing as a Sand Shark, striking out 11 and allowing three runs on seven hits over seven innings. He walked off the field after the seventh trailing 3-2, but the Sand Sharks put him in position for the win with a rally in the top of the eighth.
Ty Main led off the inning with a double down the right-field line, and Collins came off the bench to score Main on a triple down the left-field line, tying it at 3.
That chased Black (11-2), and Blake Cilwick followed with a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle against reliever Zach Sterling to give USCB the lead for good.
Black allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out seven in 7 1-3 innings. He gave up two runs in the first on Conald Mansfield's double down the left-field line, then settled in and shut down the Sand Sharks until the eighth-inning rally.
The Sand Sharks added three insurance runs in the ninth, as David O'Neil scored on a wild pitch and Collins drove in two more with a single to left.
Colton Rudd pitched two scoreless innings for his fifth save.
The Sand Sharks face Union (Tenn.) at noon Saturday, with the winner advancing to take on St. Thomas (Fla.) in the championship game at 4 p.m. The USCB-Union winner will have to beat the undefeated Bobcats twice to advance to the Avista-NAIA World Series.
