HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Fisher College on Sunday, claiming a 12-2 victory in the opener behind a terrific outing from senior Miles Galvin before falling 5-1 in the finale at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
The Sand Sharks jumped out for six runs in the first inning in the opener and cruised from there, as Galvin held the Falcons ton one unearned run on three hits over seven innings. He struck out two and didn't issue a walk in earning his first win of the season.
Leadoff man J.J. Crespo had a pair of hits in the six-run first inning, including a two-run single. Kyle Thompson also had two hits in the game and drove in a run.
The Falcons got an outstanding pitching performance of their own in the second game, as left-hander Chris O'Hare struck out 10 over seven innings, allowing one run on six hits. The transfer from Yale gave up an RBI single to Erik Armstrong in the first inning but shut down the Sand Sharks after that to earn his second win of the series. He also earned the win in relief in Friday's 6-2 Fisher victory in 11 innings.
O'Hare outdueled Hunter Englehart, who allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits over five innings.
Trailing 3-1, the Sand Sharks threatened in the sixth, loading the bases on back-to-back singles by Terry McClinton and Jon Andrews and a walk by Nick Payne, but O'Hare struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Andrews went 2-for-4 in the nightcap to pace USCB's offense.
The Sand Sharks continue their long homestand with a three-game series against Georgia Gwinnett next weekend. The series begins with a single game at 2 p.m. Friday and concludes with a doubleheader at noon Saturday.
