HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — The second day of the season produced the same result as the first for the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team, as the Sand Sharks split a doubleheader with Shawnee State (Ohio) for the second consecutive day Sunday at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
The Sand Sharks won Sunday's first game 7-4 behind a solid USCB debut from junior right-hander Hunter Englehart and a big day at the plate from juniors Blake Cilwick and Erik Armstrong and senior Terry McClinton. But the Bears rebounded to claim the final game 15-9 to salvage a split of the four-game series.
After falling behind early in both games on opening day, the Sand Sharks struck first Sunday. Cilwick's RBI single and McClinton's run-scoring double off the right-field fence staked Englehart to a 2-0 lead after one inning.
The Bears tied it at 2 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but USCB broke it open with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Cilwick beat out an infield single to give the Sand Sharks the lead, Armstrong busted it open with a three-run double to left-center and McClinton added an insurance run with a triple down the left-field line.
Englehart worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first and settled in to pitch five solid innings, striking out seven and allowing two runs on three hits with four walks. Junior right-hander Stephen Richards pitched the final two innings for USCB.
USCB also took an early lead in the second game, going up 1-0 on junior Jon Andrews' RBI triple to center, but Shawnee State rallied for six runs in the third and the Sand Sharks were never able to get back into it.
The Sand Sharks return to action next weekend, opening Sun Conference play with a three-game series at Webber International. The first game is set for 7 p.m. Friday, and the series concludes with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday. Check USCBAthletics.com later this week for links to live coverage.
