Sand Shark Baseball Drops Pitchers' Duel To Open Conference Play

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team wound up on the wrong end of a pitchers' duel Friday, falling 2-1 at Webber International in the first game of a three-game series to open Sun Conference play.

USCB's Miles Galvin and Webber International's Chris Garcia dueled for most of the night, as neither team scored through the first four innings. Garcia didn't allow a hit until David Greene's homer leading off the fifth put the Sand Sharks (2-3, 0-1 TSC) ahead 1-0.

Galvin struck out seven over 6 1/3 innings, and he kept the Warriors off the board until the seventh, when Billy Farrell's two-run double gave Webber International (2-4, 1-0) a 2-1 advantage.

Kyle McCullough came on in relief and held it there, and the Sand Sharks threatened in the eighth with Jon Andrews' leadoff single and J.J. Crespo's two-out walk, but they couldn't push across the tying run.

George Schmitt pitched the final two innings for the Warriors to earn the save.

Greene, making his season debut after sitting out last weekend with a knee injury, went 2-for-4 to pace the USCB offense.

Galvin allowed two runs on five hits and walked four. McCullough walked two and struck out one in 1 2/3 hitless frames.

The teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
