JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team split a doubleheader at Edward Waters on Tuesday, winning 4-0 in the opener before dropping the nightcap 8-6.
Sophomore right-hander Junior Delatorre (3-1) was outstanding on the mound for the Sand Sharks in the first game, striking out 10 in a four-hit shutout. He did not allow a walk while posting the first shutout for USCB since Michael Heesch and Adam Miller blanked Warner in back-to-back games April 13 and 14 of last season.
The Sand Sharks staked Delatorre to an early lead on Brandon Joyce's sacrifice fly in the first inning, and J.J. Crespo plated two more runs with a single in the second. USCB tacked on an insurance run in the fifth on Terry McClinton's sacrifice fly.
The Sand Sharks (15-16) found themselves in a big hole in the second game, as Edward Waters scored five runs in the first and another in the second for a 6-0 lead.
USCB came back to pull within 7-6, scoring four runs in the fourth — on five consecutive hits — and two in the fifth, but the Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and held the Sand Sharks scoreless in the sixth and seventh to preserve the victory. USCB loaded the bases in the seventh but couldn't push across any runs.
Ryan Walker and Denzel Campbell each had two hits for USCB in the second game, and Nick Payne and Ashly Morris each had a hit and two RBIs.
The Sand Sharks return home this weekend to face No. 16 St. Thomas in a three-game Sun Conference series. The first game is set for 2 p.m. Friday with a doubleheader scheduled for noon Saturday.
