USCB Baseball Drops Series Opener At Florida Memorial

Box Score

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Four errors came back to haunt the University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team, as the Sand Sharks squandered a five-run lead in a 7-6 loss Friday in the opener of a three-game Sun Conference series at Florida Memorial.

The Sand Sharks (8-11, 1-6 TSC) started off red-hot against Lions starter Colby Costanzo, scoring three runs in the first and two in the second. USCB had a chance to really break it open when it loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but Costanzo worked out of the jam without any further damage, and Florida Memorial started its rally in the bottom of the inning.

The Lions (4-20, 1-12) scored an unearned run in the third and tacked on four runs in the fourth to tie it, then scored twice in the seventh to take the lead.

USCB scored one in the eighth but left the tying run at third base and went down in order in the ninth.

Miles Galvin took the loss despite pitching well, allowing seven runs — three earned — on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts.

Terry McClinton paced USCB's offense, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Ryan Doeppel went 2-for-4, and Blake Cilwick was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.
