LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team got great pitching in the first game and swung the bats well in the second but couldn't put the two together Saturday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Georgia Gwinnett.
The Sand Sharks smacked 11 hits but left 10 men on base in a 4-2 loss in the opener, spoiling another strong outing from Junior Delatorre. The Grizzlies didn't manage a hit against Delatorre (2-1) until the fifth, and USCB staked the junior right-hander to a 2-0 lead on Alex Bonilla's run-scoring triple in the fourth and Blake Cilwick's RBI single in the fifth.
Georgia Gwinnett (17-3) pushed one across with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and broke out with three runs in the sixth. Delatorre walked home the tying run before USCB went to the bullpen for Gage Roth, who was greeted with a two-run single by Zach Alvord that plated what proved to be the winning runs.
Ashly Morris went 3-for-5 and Ryan Walker and Brandon Joyce each had two hits for USCB.
Morris and Bonilla each recorded three hits and two RBIs and Joyce added two hits and two RBIs in the second game, as USCB came through with several clutch hits. The Grizzlies scored in seven straight innings, though, and claimed a 14-8 victory to finish the sweep.
Hunter Englehart (1-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs — four earned — on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
USCB (9-8) travels to Brewton-Parker for a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. Tuesday before returning home for a three-game Sun Conference series against Florida Memorial on Friday and Saturday.
