MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team suffered a pair of one-run losses Saturday at St. Thomas, losing 5-4 and 4-3 in Sun Conference play.
The Sand Sharks (14-18, 6-12 TSC) let a two-run lead slip away in the ninth inning of the first game and couldn't dig out of a 4-0 hole in the finale.
JJ Crespo went 4-for-5 to lead the USCB offense in the opener. The Sand Sharks pushed across three runs in the third on RBI singles by Ashly Morris and Erik Armstrong and a squeeze bunt from Brandon Joyce. After Edwin Medina hit a two-run homer for St. Thomas in the bottom of the inning, Crespo added an RBI single in the seventh for a 4-2 lead.
Junior Delatorre turned in a strong performance on the mound in Game 1 for USCB, allowing three runs — two earned — on three hits over eight-plus innings. He issued a leadoff walk in the ninth and was relieved by Gage Roth, who was tagged with the loss when the Bobcats rallied for three runs in the inning.
The Bobcats scored a run in each of the first four innings in Game 2 and made the lead stand up. The Sand Sharks cut into the lead in the sixth, getting on the board on Armstrong's fifth home run of the season and cutting it to 4-3 on Ryan Walker's two-run double, but they couldn't push across the tying run.
Shane Murli took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings. Stephen Richards worked four scoreless innings in relief, allowing four hits.
