Sand Shark Baseball Ends Season With Tough Losses At Warner

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKE WALES, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team wrapped up its 2014 campaign with a pair of close defeats Saturday, falling 4-3 in the conclusion of a suspended game and losing 5-3 in the finale of a three-game Sun Conference series at Warner.

The Sand Sharks (19-24, 9-18 TSC) needed to win both games to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the six-team Sun Conference Tournament.

After picking up the game that was halted by inclement weather Friday, the Sand Sharks pushed across a run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to get within 4-3, but they couldn't plate the tying run. USCB stranded a runner in scoring position in the eighth and couldn't take advantage of a one-out walk in the ninth.

Blake Cilwick and Matt Kianka each had two hits for the Sand Sharks in the continued game. Senior Stephen Richards (2-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings before play was stopped Friday.

USCB fell behind early in the finale — Warner plated three runs in the second with the help of two errors and a wild pitch — and could never dig out of the hole. Brandon Joyce and Denzel Campbell knocked in runs to get the Sand Sharks within 3-2, and the teams traded sacrifice flies to make it 4-3.

Warner pushed across an insurance run with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth and the Sand Sharks went down in order in the ninth.

Kianka and Ashly Morris had two hits apiece for USCB, and senior Shane Murli (1-4) was charged with three runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings for the loss.

It was the final game in a Sand Shark uniform for 12 seniors, including four-year letterwinners Cilwick, Richards, Campbell, Alex Graham and Erik Armstrong
