#SandSharkBaseball Climbs To No. 6, Routs Barons Twice

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The USCB baseball team climbed to its highest ranking in program history Tuesday before cruising to two more victories, sweeping Brewton-Parker with 6-0 and 10-1 wins.

The Sand Sharks moved up one spot to No. 6 in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches Top 25 Poll released Tuesday, then routed the Barons twice to improve to 29-4.

Brewton-Parker's Stephen Farris kept the Sand Sharks at bay for four innings in the opener, but USCB broke through with three runs in the fifth on Max Balter's RBI double, Kal Davis' sacrifice fly and Michael Johnson's RBI single. Davis, Johnson and Keith Ezersky each added RBI singles in the seventh to widen the margin.

Justin Kortessis picked up the win with four scoreless frames, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two. Blake Drew struck out five and gave up two hits and a walk in a three-inning save to complete the shutout.

Kortessis starred at the plate in the finale, going 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, while Brandon Joyce and Josh Reinhart each drove in two runs.

Reinhart started the scoring with an RBI single in the first, and the Sand Sharks tacked on two more in the second on Kortessis' RBI single and Reinhart's sacrifice fly. Nick Payne came home on a passed ball in the third to make it 4-0, and Thomas Estopare and Davis each added RBI singles in the fourth.

Kortessis led off the fifth with a homer, and Joyce doubled home a run in the sixth before Cloyd and Joyce added RBI singles in the seventh.

Zach Massengale allowed four hits and struck out three in four scoreless innings for the win. Colin Tindall allowed one run in an inning of relief and Joe Schaffhauser and Forrest Kirsch each worked a scoreless frame to finish the game.

The Sand Sharks travel to No. 24 St. Thomas for a key three-game Sun Conference series this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Friday and a single game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
