»» The USCB baseball team continues Sun Conference play this weekend, traveling to Thomas for a three-game series. The Sand Sharks hold a three-game lead over the Night Hawks for fifth place in the conference standings and can clinch a spot in the six-team Sun Conference Tournament with one win.
»» Junior UTIL Bobby Wenthe has 10 home runs this season, breaking Ashly Morris' single-season USCB record of 8 set in 2015. Despite being in his first season at USCB, Wenthe ranks second on the Sand Sharks' all-time home run list, trailing only Erik Armstrong (13).
»» Wenthe leads the Sand Sharks with 51 RBIs, which ranks sixth on the single-season list. Kal Davis set the school record last season with 71. Wenthe ranks 11th in the NAIA in RBIs per game (1.308) and 12th in total RBIs.
»» Senior 3B Brandon Joyce has 125 career RBIs, which ranks second in program history behind R.J. Neal (133). Joyce's 192 hits are the fifth-most all-time at USCB, and he is the school's all-time leader in walks (110).
»» USCB ranks 17th in the NAIA in stolen bases (86) and 20th in stolen bases per game (2.098). Sophomore OF JoJo Markle (18) and senior OF Thomas Estopare (15) lead the way on the basepaths.
»» Four different USCB pitchers have tied the school record with 12 strikeouts in a game this season. Senior LHP Wade Arduini and senior RHP Justin Kortessis each matched the record earlier this season against Florida Memorial, and senior RHP Julio De Pena and junior RHP Zac Burke tied the mark against Fisher.
»» Senior 1B/RHP Justin Kortessis was named the No. 13 pro prospect in the NAIA by Perfect Game last month. Kortessis was 7-0 with a 1.86 ERA in 15 appearances (six starts) for the Sand Sharks last season and is 6-3 with a 3.02 ERA in nine starts this season. He has compiled 56 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings in 2017.
»» Senior 1B/LHP Wade Arduini has been the Sand Sharks' top starting pitcher in conference play, going 4-0 with a 3.32 ERA and three complete games in six starts.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Night Hawks had a tough early-season schedule but have won their past three Sun Conference series. Tanner Long (.338 BA, 2 HR, 19 RBIs), Tanner Elsbernd (.333, 4 HR, 41 RBIs) and Jalbert Melo (.324, 5 HR, 34 RBIs, 12 SBs) lead an offense that averages more than six runs per game. Jordan Martin (6-4, 3.86 ERA) is the workhorse of the pitching staff and is coming off a complete game victory with 11 strikeouts last Friday against Ave Maria.
