The 2018 Sand Shark Baseball season begins this Friday, February 2 when the Milligan College (TN) Buffaloes come to town for a 3-game series at Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville, SC.
The Sand Sharks are coming off a 2017 season in which the program felt out a new coaching staff on its way to finishing 32-22 overall and 13-11 in conference play to take 5th place in regular season play.
On the weekend series with Milligan, Coach Jeremy Christian said, "We are excited to open the 2018 season and look forward to doing so against a quality opponent in Milligan College. Coach Meade does a great job with his guys and this will be a true test for us as we begin the spring season. They return several key pieces from last year's team and had a talented recruiting class so we will definitely have our hands full this weekend.
The Buffaloes are coming off a 2017 campaign in which they went 23-29 (11-16 in conference) and finished 7th in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. This season Milligan was ranked 7th in the AAC preseason poll.
The Buffaloes return senior slugger Jascanel Ferreras, who finished the 2017 season with a .358 batting average, contributing a team-high 68 hits and 46 runs on the season. Behind Ferreras is fellow senior Chris Patterson, who hit .351 last season and led the team in RBI's with 39.
The Sand Sharks last met the Buffaloes in 2012, when USCB took all three games in the series. USCB will look to continue that trend this Friday and Saturday.
