This Week In USCB Athletics: Jan. 27 - Feb. 2

BLUFFTON, S.C. - This week in USCB Athletics four Sand Shark teams will be in action - men's and women's track & field at the Carolina Challenge, baseball versus Mid-Atlantic Christian and softball versus Montreat.

On baseball's (Friday, Jan. 31) and softball's (Sunday, Feb. 2) opening day, USCB Athletics is supporting Read Across America, so if you bring a new children's book, you will receive free admission to the game on that day. 

Men's and Women's Track & Field - At Carolina Challenge

USCB men's and women's track & field teams will make a quick turnaround, as the two programs will travel back to Columbia, S.C. to compete in the Carolina Challenge on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. The two-day meet will be held at the Carolina Indoor Facility.

Friday's schedule will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's weight throw, men's shot put, men's and women's long jump and women's pole vault. The first track event will be the women's 60m trials, and it begins at 11 a.m.

Saturday's slate will commence at 9 a.m. with the men's 5k. The first four field events will be the men's pole vault, men's and women's high jump and women's weight throw. The final two events of the Carolina Challenge will be the men's and women's 4 x 400m relay.

Baseball - Three-Game Series Versus Mid-Atlantic Christian

USCB baseball will open its 2020 slate with a three-game series with MACU at Richard Gray Stadium. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. and will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 1 beginning at 12 p.m. 

The Sand Sharks are coming off a 22-31 season, which featured 10 wins coming inside the friendly confines of Richard Gray. Last year USCB opened the season strong by going 4-1 with wins over Milligan and Paine at Hardeeville, and the Sand Sharks finished the season strong by picking up a key win over No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett. 

USCB welcomes 51 players to the 2020 roster, which features 23 returners and 28 newcomers. Headlining the returning roster is Tavaris Terrell, Eamonn Collins, Tanner Davis, Ryan Reynolds, Jay Newell, Tristan Triplett, Noah Matthews and Kevin Smith. Collins returns after starting 11 games on the bump last year, where he struck out 57 batters in 63.2 innings. Terrell, who started 52 of the 53 contests last year, returns after hitting .283 with eight extra-base hits and 21 RBIs.

Softball - Doubleheader Versus Montreat

USCB softball commences its 2020 slate with a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 2 against Montreat at Richard Gray Stadium. The first game is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Hardeeville. 

The softball squad is coming off one of its most historic seasons when it went 40-13 overall and 15-9 in Sun Conference play. USCB started the season 19-0 with impressive wins over Truett McConnell, Rio Grande, Reinhardt and Thomas. The Sand Sharks also toted a stellar 26-2 record at Richard Gray Stadium. Their lone two losses of the year at home were to conference rivals Ave Maria and Coastal Georgia.

USCB highlighted the 2019 season by racing through the Sun Conference Tournament by outscoring the opposition 22-6 in the three-game stretch. With the conference tournament victory, USCB claimed the automatic qualifier to the NAIA Tournament where it traveled to Lindsey Wilson for the Opening Round. 

The Sand Sharks have a good mix of returning players (15) and newcomers (nine) on the 2020 roster. At the top of the lineup, USCB returns key bats in Shania Domingue, Rachel Frankhouser, Taylor Boykin and Kaitlyn O'Hearn. In her first year in a Sand Shark uniform last year, Domingue hit .402 with a team-leading four homers and 53 RBIs. 

In the circle, USCB returns key pitchers Sloan Ducey and Maria Molloseau. As a freshman, Ducey led the team in ERA (1.92), as she appeared in 25 games (16 starts). Ducey twirled 113 innings and struck out 79 batters, while holding opponents to a .237 batting average.
