This Week In USCB Athletics: March 9 - 15

BLUFFTON, S.C. - All six spring USCB athletic teams will be in action this week. USCB baseball and softball will play eight combined home games this week, while both men's and women's golf will compete in two outings this week.

Men's Golf - at Skyhawk Invitational

Men's golf kicks off the week at the Skyhawk Invitational from March 9-10. The two-day tournament is hosted by AAC member Point and is held at the Callaway Golf Course in Pine Mountain, Ga. 

The men's team will have the opportunity to go head-to-head with NCAA DI Big East conference member Butler at its home course - Oldfield Golf Club. USCB and Butler will play 18 holes in a dual match on March 12.

Dawson Peters continued his tear on the links, as he finished second at the annual Sand Shark Classic last week. The junior shot under par in all three rounds (71-71-70) en route to his first career Sun Conference Golfer of the Week honor. 

Jacob Thomas was also impressive at the home meet, as he finished at tied for fifth at 1-under 215. Highlighting Thomas' three-round tournament was a stellar 4-under 68 second round score.

Women's Golf - at Skyhawk Invitational and at Lowcountry Intercollegiate

USCB women's golf will travel with the men's team to the Skyhawk Invitational from March 9-10. The tournament is also held at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain. 

The Sand Sharks will conclude the week with a local tournament, as they will participate in Wofford's event - the Lowcountry Intercollegiate. That tournament will be held on Hilton Head Island, S.C. at the Moss Creek Golf Club, and the DI tournament will be held from March 14-15.

In the Sand Sharks' most recent outing (Oyster Shuck Match Play), USCB finished in fourth place at the NCAA DI tournament. Deliah Prescha was the only USCB golfer to go undefeated, as she went 2-0-1 in the two-day outing. She started the tournament with a 5&4 win and concluded the outing with a 1UP victory. 

Porta also picked up two wins at the tournament in Charleston, S.C., as she won in the first and third rounds.

Men's and Women's Track and Field - at GATA Classic

The men's and women's track and field teams will commence its outdoor portion of the season, as it will travel to Georgia Southern for the GATA Classic in Statesboro, Ga. The one-day meet will be held on March 14. 

To conclude the indoor slate, USCB sent three different athletes to compete in six different events at the NAIA Indoor Championships on Brookings, S.D. 

Kadari Mitchell headlined the results for the Sand Sharks, as the sophomore finished seventh overall in the 200m at the national meet. He posted a 21.61 in the prelims, which set a new personal best for the Statesboro native. 

Iyana McKeever and Ja'Milya Poole also competed at the meet and represented USCB well.

Baseball - at Savannah State, versus St. Andrews and Three-Game Series versus St. Thomas

The Sand Sharks have a busy week ahead of them, as they will play five games from March 10-14. 

To open the week, USCB will play its first road game of the year at Savannah State on March 10 at 4 p.m. The Sand Sharks will then return home to play four straight home games beginning with St. Andrews on March 11 at 3 p.m. 

To end the week, USCB will return to conference action on March 13 against No. 2 St. Thomas, as the two clubs will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. To end the three-game set, the Sand Sharks and Bobcats will play on March 14 at noon. 

USCB used several pitchers last week, but Javier Saenz and Bryant Ard were the two Sand Sharks that had stellar performances. Saenz pitched in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, and the junior worked three innings without allowing a hit, run or walk. Ard worked 3.2 frames, scattered just one hit, allowed no runs and struck out four in the series finale versus Bryant & Stratton.

Offensively, Leandy Castro was strong hitting out of the leadoff spot for USCB. The junior posted at least one hit in all three games, including two multi-hit performances. He highlighted his week with a three-hit game in the series finale, which included two doubles and a RBI. He finished the week with six hits, three runs, four doubles and three RBIs.

Softball - Doubleheaders versus Coastal Georgia and Union, doubleheader at Southeastern

The Sand Shark softball team will open a busy slate, as it will play six games in four days. Four of those games will be inside the friendly confines of Richard Gray Stadium (Coastal Georgia on March 11 and Union on March 12), and USCB will conclude the week with another TSC doubleheader at Southeastern on March 14.

Four Sand Sharks - Taylor Boykin (.395), Emily Martin (.311), Kaleigh Furbush (.306) and Jodi Hatcher (.300) - are hitting .300 or better in 20 games this year. Boykin leads the team in runs scored with 18, while Martin paces the squad in hits (19), doubles (9), home runs (1) and RBIs (14). Hatcher has started 13 games this year and averages just below a hit a game (0.92 hits per game).

Junior Maria Molloseau continues to carry the pitching staff, as she has appeared in 13 of the 20 games this season (11 starts). She sports a strong 1.77 ERA and 1.03 WHIP, as she has held batters to a .221 batting average. She has a team-best 56 strikeouts in 71 innings of work this season. 

As a team, USCB has outscored the opposition by 22 runs, 82-60, and has outhit its opponents, 136-120. USCB is hitting .268 as a team and has 25 extra-base hits to go along with its .323 slugging percentage and .352 on-base percentage.
