COLUMBIA, S.C. - After posting stellar marks at the Sun Conference Indoor Championships 12 days ago, Shamar Deacon clocked another impressive mark in the men's 800m at the UofSC Indoor Open on Friday inside the Gamecock Track & Field Facility, as he bested the NAIA 'A' Standard by nearly a full second.
Field Highlights
In the only men's field event for USCB, Elijah Merida represented the Sand Sharks in the men's long jump. He placed 28th with a mark of 5.89m.
USCB sent out four athletes to compete in the women's weight throw - Allayah Bryan, Jana Barden, Bianca Simpson and Mariya Martino. Bryan led USCB with a heave of 10.65m. Right behind her was Barden, as she made a throw of 9.78m.
Track Highlights
In his lone event of the meet, Deacon again impressed, as he turned in another top-5 performance - this time in the men's 800m invite. He finished fifth out of 12 runners with a time of 1:53.79. That time was nearly a full second faster than the NAIA A Standard and also shattered his previous PR by nearly two seconds.
Maisonne Jones collected a top-10 finish in the women's 60m hurdles. She collected a mark of 9.52m, which was just 0.12 seconds from moving into the top 7.
Setting a new personal record, Kadari Mitchell was quick in the men's 300m. He clocked a 35.14 mark, which placed him second. His previous-best time was 35.91, which he set at the Gamecock Opener a year ago.
In a 31-runner field, Jenitza Trinidad collected a 17th-place finish in the women's 800m. The senior posted a time of 2:36.81.
A pair of Sand Sharks - Alexa Lashley and Cydney Stevenson - represented USCB in the women's 1 mile run. Lashley led the duo with a fourth-place finish at 5:56.90, and Stevenson posted an eighth-place time of 6:33.10.
In an event that featured four Sand Sharks - the men's 3000m - three Sand Sharks finished behind one another at 13th, 14th and 15th positions. Tewodros Eckstein led the Sand Sharks with a 9:44.66. Eli Smith followed with a 9:49.90 time, and Jay King finished in 15th at 9:56.73. Travis Patten also ran for USCB, as he ran an 11:39.65.
What's Next?
In the final tune-up before the NAIA Indoor National Championships, USCB will take several athletes to the CNU Qualifier & Combined Events meet, which is held on Feb. 26 in Newport News, Va.
