Track and Field have strong performances at Georgia Tech and SC State

ATLANTA | ORANGEBURG -- The USCB track and field teams delivered standout performances over the weekend, with a strong showing at the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Classic hosted by South Carolina State on Saturday, and several athletes also making their mark at the Georgia Tech Invitational.

Sprinters LeeAisha Ford and Maggie Olsen led the way in the 200-meter dash, securing top-15 finishes. Ford clocked in at 26.69 seconds while Olsen was close behind at 26.85. Olsen also turned in a solid effort in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:10.45. Ford doubled in the field events as well, recording a 23.57m mark in the discus throw.

Senior distance runner Cydney Stevenson had a notable performance in the 1500m run, placing 11th overall with a time of 5:47.73.

In the throws, Sophia Stalford continued to impress, finishing in the top 10 in both the discus (32.90m) and hammer throw (32.75m), while also placing in the top 15 in the shot put with an 8.72m effort. De'Andra Brown added to the Sand Sharks' field success with a top-10 throw in the shot put at 9.95m.

Kasey Thompson showcased her versatility with a multi-event effort. She landed in the top 15 in both the high jump and long jump and capped her day with a podium finish in the pole vault, clearing 2.20m.

The distance crew stood out for the USCB men as Jacob Mitchell claimed a top-10 spot in the 1500m with a time of 4:13.52.

In the throws, Devin Watson earned points for the Sand Sharks with a 38.34m discus throw. Jaxson Allen and Jason Jose both finished in the top 15 in the hammer throw.

Jake Laird had a strong outing in the javelin, placing sixth overall with a 46.82m throw. Laird also tied teammate Ethan Cockayne in the pole vault, finishing fifth and seventh respectively. Meanwhile, Q France leapt to an eighth-place finish in the long jump with a 6.52m effort.

Several Sand Sharks also competed in the prestigious Georgia Tech Invitational, where Cam Edwards delivered strong marks in the jumps with a 6.60m long jump and a 14.29m triple jump. Sam Mitchell added to the team's field event success with a 13.35m triple jump.

In sprints, Bryson Shears and Sam Mitchell impressed in the 100m dash with times of 10.77 and 10.88 seconds, respectively. Dionna Rivers, the lone female competing at the Georgia Tech Invitational for USCB, posted a time of 12.90 in the 100m dash. Shears and Mitchell teamed up with Cornell Harris and Zach Sellers for the 4x100 relay, finishing 13th overall in 41.58 seconds. Shears also clocked 21.74 in the 200m dash, while Sellers and Harris posted times of 49.93 and 51.12 in the 400m sprint.

The Sand Sharks continue to build momentum as the outdoor season progresses, with athletes across disciplines contributing to a well-rounded and competitive team effort.
