Brian Lewis to lead USCB Baseball into new era

BLUFFTON -- The USCB Sand Sharks are turning to a familiar face to lead their baseball program into its next chapter. Brian Lewis, who has served as the team's assistant coach for the past two seasons, will take the helm as the program's fifth head coach in history.

"It's always a good day when you can look within and find the candidate that you believe can not only do the job, but do it exceptionally well, with the like-minded mission of creating Champions and Leaders. As we look to compete in the Peach Belt Conference, I have the utmost confidence that Brian will provide the leadership our team needs." said Monahan. "I'm excited about the future of Sand Shark Baseball under Coach Lewis and look forward to working with him in this new role."

Lewis brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the program's culture, having worked closely with the team since joining in 2024. His résumé spans more than two decades and includes stops at successful junior college programs and the highly regarded Northwoods League.

Before coming to USCB, Lewis served as head coach at Viterbo University for seven seasons, following a two-year stint as an assistant. During his time with the V-Hawks, he guided the program to new heights, including a trip to the NSAA conference tournament semifinals in 2022—the school's deepest postseason run in a decade. He also mentored 10 NSAA all-conference players and two Gold Glove recipients.

Lewis also spent three seasons as the hitting coach at Illinois Central College, the former program of current Sand Sharks Noah Campbell, Luke Doty, and Cole Thomas. Though their paths didn't cross, Lewis' tenure helped shape the program's strong foundation, one that continues to develop high-level talent. Earlier in his career, he spent 11 seasons at Lewis & Clark Community College.

His coaching journey extends beyond college baseball. In the Northwoods League, one of the nation's premier summer collegiate leagues, Lewis established himself as one of the most successful managers in league history, ranking fourth all-time with 290 wins.

"I would like to thank Chancellor Panu, Quin Monahan, and Genia Montford for their trust and belief in my ability to lead the USCB baseball program," Lewis said. "I am excited to begin the task of rebuilding Sand Shark Baseball and look forward to collaborating with the community and our alumni to build a brighter future and winning culture here at USCB."

Over the course of his career, Lewis has coached more than 150 MLB Draft picks, including four first-round selections: Charlie Condon (Colorado Rockies, 2024) Brice Matthews (Houston Astros, 2023), Chase Davis (St. Louis Cardinals, 2023), and Korey Lee (Houston Astros, 2019). Twelve of his former players have reached the Major Leagues, including current big leaguers Lars Nootbaar, Riley Adams, Brooks Kriske, David Villar, Mason McCoy, Kyle Nelson, and Cesar Salazar, as well as retired MLB veterans Joe Thatcher, Justin Christian, Cory Wade, and Jeff Gray.

With a deep coaching pedigree and a strong foundation already in place, Lewis is poised to lead the Sand Sharks into a new era—continuing the program's tradition of excellence while charting a bold path forward.
